‘Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family–both blood and chosen. We learned early on that without ‘ohana, training and racing would not be the same: these are our training buddies, supportive family members, and friends. They provide us with both support and tough love during countless hours of training. It is our ‘ohana who gets us through the most tired, sore, hungry and grumpy moments of race preparation and then cheer their hearts out or race along with us when we toe the line.
Our tribute to our ‘ohana is captured in this women’s triathlon and cycling kit. Its vibrant turquoise tones exemplify SMASH Co-founder Michele’s very first personal experience of Ironman and ‘ohana: as a ten-year-old these tones of the Pacific were her first impression of the Big Island after a long plane trip over to support her father Jim in his second Hawaii Ironman. This was 1983, when the ‘ohana’s legacy was officially passed on and Michele’s love for triathlon was born. Michele returned to Kona in 2008 to race in the World Championships herself, so it was only fitting that SMASH introduce this ‘Ohana kit on the island for this year’s big dance.
